Hello, Chocolatier, and thank you for writing for me!
This letter has been cannibalized from previous exchange letters; feel free to take a gander at those (here) if you want more insight into the sorts of thing I like.
The structure of this letter is as follows:
··Shipping and relationships
··General likes
··A note on AUs
··DNWs
··Opt-ins
··Fandom specifics
······Animamundi: Dark Alchemist
······Hanakisou
······Hunter x Hunter
······Koori no Mamono no Monogatari | The Ice-Cold Demon's Tale
······Lamento -BEYOND THE VOID-
······Shirogane no Ou
······Tennis no Oujisama | The Prince of Tennis
······Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's
······Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
I hope you'll use this letter in the spirit it is intended: I don't want to be pushy or demanding, I just want to give you some idea of the sorts of things I like and hopefully spark some inspiration. If it doesn't work for you, remember that optional details are optional. The prompts are ideas, not demands! Please feel free to take what works for you, discard the rest, and write something that you have fun with. The best fic is one that the author enjoyed writing!
I hope you have a good exchange, and again, thanks for writing for me!
SHIPPING AND RELATIONSHIPS
First off: I LOVE gen. I'd be 100% happy to receive gen. If, for whatever reason, you don't want to write shipfic, I would be thrilled to receive gen of the same characters, even if I have not requested the gen version.
As for the ships I have requested, I don't mind in the slightest if you write them gen, but please don't ship those characters with someone else, either in addition to or instead of each other. I tend to OTP pretty hard, and I'm not interested in seeing unrequested ships involving requested characters. (If you want to include background ships involving non-requested characters, feel free to ask via the mods! I'm much more likely to be amenable to that.)
I'll also note that my ships do not have to be straightforward romance. For example, I absolutely LOVE one-sided relationships--unrequited pining is my jam. I'll mention specifically if I especially like A→B. I also really like relationships that muddy the waters and toe the line between romantic and platonic. If you agonize about whether to tag it A/B or A&B, that is excellent, I eat that stuff up with a spoon.
Lastly, I'm not much interested in sexual content. I usually skip over smut, and even when it's not explicit, I typically hold to a less-is-more policy. Fade to black? That's fine! Stops at kissing? Great! Just some hand-holding? Yessss excellent. Nothing but gazing meaningfully at each other from across the room? Hold me, I'm going weak at the knees.
GENERAL LIKES
When it comes to fic, these are a few of my favorite things:
··Intense relationships, as well as all related topics and tropes. "You are my most important person," codependency, us against the world, self-sacrifice, obsession, "I would do terrible things for you," found families, all of it. Show me just how dedicated to and invested in each other these people are--be the relationship romantic or platonic, healthy or otherwise--and I will be there with bells on.
··Loyalty, especially mutual loyalty
··Angst (I like tragic/downer endings just as much as happy ones!)
··Pining (mutual or unrequited), especially when it's intense but unspoken
··I'm so desperately in love with you I might be slightly crazy
··Reunions
··Coming home (to someone)
··I would know you anywhere
··I'll face any scandal for you
··Between the scenes/missing scenes
··Outsider POV
··Understated/low-key signs of affection
··Non-sexual physicality (hugging, holding hands, bumping foreheads, leaning on each other, etc.)
··Friends to lovers
··Sudden realization of feelings (one's own or someone else's)
··A somber, dark, or bittersweet tone
A NOTE ON AUS
I generally prefer fics to be more or less canon-compliant (be it set pre-, during, or post-canon). However, I do like the following types of AUs and fusionfics:
··Loveless!AUs
··daemon!AUs
··canon divergence/for want of a nail
··time loops
··hanahaki
··soulmates/soulbonds (including soulmarks, red string of fate, etc.)
However, please note that I prefer these to remain--aside from the obvious AU aspect--within the context of the canon universe. For example, if canon is about a high school baseball team, I'm totally on board with characters suddenly having virgin kitty ears, or daemons, or soulmarks... but I do hope they're still high school students playing baseball.
As a side note: Please feel free to play these tropes straight, add a new twist, or subvert them however you'd like.
DNWs
I would rather not see any of the following:
··AUs/crossovers/fusions, including mundane, genderswap, ageswap, etc., EXCEPT those mentioned above
··Explicit sexual content
··Unrequested ships involving requested characters, including infidelity, threesomes/moresomes, and open or poly relationships
··Anything involving pregnancy, childbirth, or young children
··Non-canonical nicknames/pet names/terms of endearment
··First-person POV (epistolary is OK)
··Crackfic
OPT-INS
Assuming it's appropriate to the story being told, I wholeheartedly welcome the following:
··Character death
··Bad/tragic/downer endings
··Horror
··Canon levels of violence, gore, adult themes, etc.
··References to/discussion of canon sexual content
··A requested character not technically appearing in the fic (as long as they're still important to the story)
··Second-person POV
··Epistolary fic
FANDOMS
I've written different amounts for different fandoms and relationships, but please do not think that if I've written more, it must mean I want it more. If I've listed it here, it's because I really want to see it!
Please note that I am requesting fic for all fandoms.
Animamundi: Dark Alchemist
Francis Dashwood/Georik Zaberisk
This was the first visual novel I ever played, and it left a huge impression on me. I love the over-the-top gothic feel, the drama and angst, and the great variety of bad and bittersweet endings. What can I say, I dig how dark and twisted it is. Bonus points for the way the game just wholesale screws with Christianity.
Dashwood is probably my favorite character of the lot. I like how his brash, irreverent persona hides an actually good, vulnerable soul with a backstory that consists almost entirely of sadness. I like how he feels trapped in the life he lives, but that he's willing to risk himself for Georik's sake. I live for the way he calls Georik "master" just because. I like how Georik starts out having absolutely zero patience for Dashwood's behavior, but gradually comes to appreciate and understand him. And yes, I do love that they have no happy ending, just different flavors of tragedy.
Honestly, I'd be happy to receive almost anything about these two. Dashwood being suggestive and teasing and Georik being standoffish and having none of it! Georik recovering from his visit to the Hellfire Club and reflecting on the, uh, moment he shared with Dashwood! Pining Dashwood, oh yes give me all the pining Dashwood, I am 100% on board with unrequited Dashwood→Georik here. I'd love to see Dashwood interacting with Lillith, Dashwood would be charming and Georik would be furious. Alternatively, I'd be interested to see Dashwood POV of some of the stuff Georik gets involved in in other routes (Dashwood becomes aware of the whole Lucifer thing? Dashwood spots Whistler the Ripper?) I'm also game for canon divergence that gives them a happier ending (though maybe not completely happy, yeah?).
I do want to emphasize that you can go as dark, gory, or macabre as you'd like. I'd rather not receive porn, but do feel free to reference/discuss canon sexual content. Also feel free to include other characters if you'd like (I'm particularly fond of Ruth and Lillith). I'm okay with all routes, including bad ends and non-Dashwood routes.
Hanakisou
Any (Kuroto/Hanashiro, Kuroto & Kurotaka, Hanashiro & Kurotaka)
I have an enormous fondness for Hanakisou. I love how the entire crapsack world is built on choices between bad and worse--the world is essentially created to self-destruct, but the built-in escape hatch is horrific, and love and death are intrinsically intertwined. But I also love how, despite so much of story being founded on tragedy and pessimism and despair, the characters nevertheless strive to cling to some sort of hope or love or struggle for something better, even if they can't attain it without hurting someone. There are so many ways that things can go wrong, and yet also a few ways--a few--that things might go at least halfway right.
I love all three of these characters. My heart just goes out to Kuroto. His life is (all his lives are) a series of traumas and tragedies. I'm drawn most to his inherent goodness despite his equally inherent nature as the harbinger of destruction. The angst and whump he suffers as a result of this is excellent, A+, would like more of that please. I love how absolutely terrifying Hanashiro is. He may look sweet and innocent, but he can be absolutely ruthless, and I love how he's only too willing to destroy the world in cold blood. And Kurotaka is probably my favorite character; I love how he's lighthearted and a bit irreverent on the outside, but full of concern on the inside. And I really like how he's willing to do so much to make Kuroto happy--to the point where he'll do what Kuroto wants, even if he disagrees.
I'd be thrilled to receive anything Hanashiro/Kuroto, be it their conflicts over Kuroto's continued existence, facing the end of the world together, their time in the tower, a deceptively peaceful moment during Kuroto's amnesia, building a life together after successfully screwing destiny, anything! I love Kuroto's relationship with Kurotaka, and I'd be super excited to see anything about them, especially if it involves Kurotaka being protective in his own way. And I would love to see any interactions between Hanashiro and Kurotaka, whether it's some fond teasing on Kurotaka's part or a tense disagreement about what's the best path forward.
I have both played the game and read the manga, so feel free to use either one. For the game, I'm happy with any route, including bad ends.
Hunter x Hunter
Gon Freecs/Killua Zoldyck
I confess to having a distinct bias for Killua. He's my absolute favorite; I fell in love with him almost from the moment he first appeared, and I adore him more with each scene he appears him. I love how he's kind of definitely screwed up, and how he's aware of it in some ways and scarily unaware of it in others. I love how desperately he loves Gon (whatever kind of love you want to interpret it as). As for Gon, I love how he's kind of an idiot, but also well-meaning and optimistic and loyal to a T. I was immediately charmed by how Gon accepts Killua wholeheartedly and basically instantly decides that they're best friends. I have also developed a near-Pavlovian reaction of flailing and squeeing every time Killua says or thinks, "I will protect Gon!" I am a simple person with simple needs okay
I ship Gon/Killua like whoa, although given their ages in canon, I'd rather not have even fade-to-black implications of sex. If you want to go for a one-sided ship, I could read Killua→Gon all day long. I'd love to read about a laid-back afternoon spent exploring together, or pining during their separation, or Gon vs. the rest of the Zoldycks. This is also a fandom where I'm really into between the scenes/missing scenes fic (for example, what happened during the 30 days when Gon couldn't use his nen?).
Feel free to include other characters (I'm also fond of Kurapika, Biscuit, and Alluka). I've only seen the 2011 anime, so please avoid manga spoilers!
Koori no Mamono no Monogatari | The Ice-Cold Demon's Tale
Any (Ishuca/Blood, Wild/Rapunzel)
Koori no Mamono no Monogatari is one of top five favorite manga of all time. I love all of them, everything, all of it, so freaking much.
I love Ishuca's inherent goodness, his strength of character, his ability to see and believe the best in anyone, and his occasional ditziness. I love Blood's determination to be the kind of person Ishuca believes he can be, his endearing lack of knowledge about human life, and how he is both embarrassed by the depth of his feelings for Ishuca and yet absolutely unwavering and unyielding and unapologetic about it. I love how much they love each other, how they stick with each other through thick and thin, how protective they are of each other and how much they're willing to sacrifice for each other. I love Wild's craftiness and cowardice, his book smarts and his rock-bottom emotional IQ, and his desperation to do right by Rapunzel coupled with the certainty that he's utterly incapable of it. I love Rapunzel's wiliness, his soft appearance that belies a core of pure steel, and his occasionally scathing politeness. I love how desperately in love they are, how they're perfectly willing to lie and steal and cheat for each other, their communication fails and their deceptions of each other and themselves, and how they'll do anything--anything--to stay together.
I'd love to get Ishuca/Blood, Wild/Rapunzel, and/or any gen combination, set any time pre-, during or post-canon. Honestly, I'd love pretty much anything here--early canon, Blood beginning to realize he's in love? Pre-reveal Rapunzel and Wild being lonely because they can't bring themselves to tell each other the truth? Cain or Nacht's POV on Ishuca and Blood's relationship? Blood/Ishuca post-canon travel adventures? Anything goes!
I have read the entire manga, so feel free to include any other characters you'd like.
Lamento - BEYOND THE VOID-
Any (Konoe/Rai, Konoe/Asato, Konoe & Shaman Cat)
Lamento is probably my favorite visual novel. I love the worldbuilding, I love the music, and I love the characters. I think Konoe is a pretty fantastic protagonist. I love how he goes from a scared country boy fleeing for his life to someone who can face down some pretty horrific things and, oh yeah, basically save the world. Asato is probably my favorite character of the lot; he's a supremely awkward but genuinely good-hearted guy, with a naïveté that's simultaneously kind of charming and kind of sad, and I love how fond and protective he is of Konoe. And I like how Rai's icy personality doesn't stop him from being honest and principled. Mostly, I love how all of them are lonely cats who have been given a terrible lot in life and are just doing their best to get by when they happen to fall in together and find something bigger to fight for. I'm also really intrigued by the Shaman Cat, who guides Konoe and definitely knows way more than he should; I wish we'd seen more of him in the game, and I'd love to see him in fic in any capacity.
For the main three or any combination thereof, I'd love to see a snippet of their post-canon lives, something beyond the epilogue, or perhaps a quiet moment in the inn, or Konoe honing his abilities as a Sanga. For both Asato and Rai, I love angst about their pasts and fear that they might one day hurt Konoe. I also like Kaltz, if you'd like to include him in a Konoe/Asato fic. For the Shaman cat, I'd love to see his POV on Konoe's journey, or for him to reappear with mysterious prophecies in a post-canon adventure. Whatever you write, I'd love to see little mentions about their more catlike qualities!
I ship both Konoe/Rai and Konoe/Asato, and I'd be equally happy to receive either. However, I like them as completely separate ships with zero overlap; I'm not interested in seeing them simultaneously, or in Rai and Asato competing for Konoe's affections (canon-style Asato-Rai antagonism is fine), or in Konoe/Rai/Asato. Feel free to go gen if you'd prefer. Feel free to use either the visual novel or the manga, and if you go with the visual novel, I'm okay with all routes, including bad ends.
Shirogane no Ou
King/Right-Eye
King & Right-Eye
Shirogane & Right-Eye
I've received some great fic in this fandom, but I always want more!
I love this obscure little manga with the fiery passion of a thousand white-hot suns. I love King and Right-Eye's relationship--the way they constantly try to protect each other from other people and from themselves, how they'll do basically anything for each other, how they are unwavering and unyielding in their loyalty to each other. And I have an enormous soft spot for Shirogane--I love it when he refuses to let the truth be ignored, I really enjoy his moments of silliness, and I really love that he's actually the one in power.
I'd be happy to receive fic for any of these characters, or any combination thereof. I don't actively ship King/Right-Eye--I mean, I love how they're slashy as all get-out and I'm pretty convinced there's no one they love more than each other and they could very easily be in love--but I so utterly adore the perfection that is their canon relationship that I feel no driving need to change it. But even if I don't need it, I can definitely get on board with it, so I've requested both the romantic and the platonic versions.
I'd love to see futurefic where they face some outside threat together (a spy in the palace? An assassination attempt? War? Zephil spreading information about Right-Eye's identity to the citizens of Quatredina?). Or perhaps what happens if Zoe returns and King yields the crown. Or pre-canon, why does Shirogane decide to put King on the throne? Or Shirogane and Right-Eye bonding. Or loyalty kink, in any and all directions.
Tennis no Oujisama | The Prince of Tennis
Shishido Ryou/Ootori Choutarou
This is one of my oldest fandoms, and I can always, always read fic for it. And while I have a lot of ships, the Silver Pair just might be my favorite. I love Shishido's prickliness and stubbornness. I love how Choutarou's gentleness hides a spine of steel. And mostly I love them together--Choutarou's loyalty and Shishido having a soft spot for him that's so big it can be seen from space, yes please. I requested the romantic relationship, but I'd be quite happy with gen if you'd rather go that route.
Generally speaking, give me ALL THE TENNIS. Tennis is a huge part of these kids' lives; if they aren't at least thinking about tennis a good deal of the time, something is seriously wrong. I love it when they're being doubles-pairsy (synchro mode, wordless communication, etc., as well as things like naturally gravitating towards each other even outside of tennis). I also like angsting about the future, or at least for there to be some awareness that some day--maybe someday soon--they won't be playing tennis together anymore. I'd also be interested to see exactly how they started training together--whose idea was it? Was any convincing needed? Was it supposed to be a one-off thing, or did they set up a training menu? How did that transform from training together to becoming a doubles pair?
I haven't kept up with Shin Tenipuri, but I can do the original series in manga, anime or musical form. Feel free to include whatever other characters you'd like, including those on other teams; on Hyoutei, I'm also fond of Atobe and Hiyoshi, and in general, I like Seigaku-Hyoutei interactions.
Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's
Bruno/Fudou Yuusei
I'm a sucker for characters who are instantly great friends, so I was charmed by Bruno and Yuusei's relationship from the very beginning. I love that Yuusei and the gang basically take Bruno in and accept him as one of their own, and that Bruno slides into Team 5D's so seamlessly. I love that even after the Antimony reveal, Yuusei refuses to believe that their friendship was a lie; I love that his faith was rewarded in Bruno's final moments. And that tragic ending hurts soooo good.
Relationship-wise, I'd be super happy to see any variation--one-sided from either side, mutual pining that doesn't go anywhere, a full-on romantic relationship, anything. I also would be happy with gen, if you'd rather. I'd love to see any time period, from amnesiac Bruno era to post-canon mourning. I'm not interested in fix-it fic where Bruno survives, but I would be interested in seeing angst about what could have been, in another world/another lifetime, but wasn't. Or little moments that are precious in retrospect. Or anything from Bruno's point of view, whether it's from before he regains his memories or right at the very end.
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
Yuuki Juudai/Johan Andersen
Juudai is quite possibly my favorite shounen protagonist of all time. I love his optimistic, genki, hot-blooded gung-ho attitude at the beginning of the series; I love his descent into darkness; I love the character growth and development he exhibits and how, by the end of the series, he's matured and been jaded and lost some of his blind idealism, but is ultimately still a good person who still believes in goodness. I also adore Johan, for a lot of the same reasons that I love Juudai. He's positive, bright, brave, determined and true. And I love how he and Juudai are kindred spirits--they hit it off from the first moment they meet, like they were destined to become friends.
I ship them like whoa, but I'm also super into them being friends who go above and beyond the call of duty for each other. I love that Juudai and Johan put themselves on the line for each other, that their faith in each other is unshakeable, and how they went through terrible things with each other, and for each other. I'd love to see anything that focuses on that. Or the two of them just hanging out, having a casual duel. Or their first reunion post-canon, after Juudai starts roaming the earth. Or what it's like when they first meet each other and realize that hey, there's someone else who understands them. Or what it's like to maintain a long-distance friendship or relationship (but while remaining confident in that relationship, and in each other).
Feel free to include whatever other characters you'd like (especially Winged Kuriboh and the Gem Beasts!). If push comes to shove, I would rather see Yubel acknowledged than ignored. Please note that I watched the anime in the original Japanese, and so I'd like to see fic about Juudai and Johan, not Jaden and Jesse.
